Double Trouble: Creating a Shared Bedroom for Brothers

Hello!

So, my sons have been happily sharing a bedroom for a couple of years now, and I wanted to share some tips and tricks we discovered along the way to create a comfortable and functional shared living space for them.

Say Yes To New Adventures

First things first, we set some ground rules. These were really important! We talked about how we would divide up the space (they each have a side of the room) and what kind of things they both like and don’t like, so that we could still preserve our collective sanity… 😉

Next, we had to figure out the layout. That was pretty simple, as I kept the furniture to a minimum, with just their beds, bookcase, and cabinet. So luckily for us, there was still some floor space for playing in the bedroom as well as for and moving around.

Storage was a bit of a challenge, but we figured out a system that worked for us. They each have their own designated storage space for clothes, toys, and other items. I used baskets, bins, and a red cabinet between their beds to keep things organized. The bookcase makes great use of vertical storage place and is the perfect place to display their favourite Lego!

Finally, we made decorating the room a fun activity! My son’s chose the doggy theme for their room (this was a hard one to reach a unanimous decision on!) but in the end it really worked well and both boy’s feel like the room really belongs to them. It definitely pays to get their buy-in on the theme/decor!

Overall, making a shared bedroom work can be a challenge, especially if your two siblings have very different personalities – but it’s definitely doable with a little creativity and planning. Just remember to set some ground rules, plan the layout, create separate zones, use storage wisely, and do it together!

I can’t believe that my boys are getting so big now that they are almost ready for their own rooms. It feels like just the other day that we were decorating their ‘shared bedroom for brothers’. But I’m glad we took the time to create a space that was comfortable and functional for both of them.
