The classic ginger jar is a classic decor accessory in many spaces and places, however much of the original form and function has changed from it’s humble beginning until now.
A little bit of history
Originally ginger jars were used to transport provisions (probably most commonly salt, oil and spices), all over the world. They were beautifully hand-painted urns with lids that later became sought after decor items in European society.
This lead to the mass production of ginger jars – as well as to the creation of ginger jars in many different colours – not just the traditional blue and white which is most typically associated with them today.
Currently…
I have two duck egg coloured ginger jars in my home…
They are identical and create a beautiful vignette on my small dresser and I adore them!
…I wish I had more! (Unfortunately duck egg blue ones seem to be hard to come by! đŸ˜‚)
Today you can find ginger jars used in many spaces – and in a variety of different ways. The humble function of the classic ginger jar as a vessel of storage has long changed to that of an object of beauty.
Styling with ginger jars
There are many different and creative ways in which the classic ginger jar can be used effectively as a beautiful statement piece in your home:
- Vase for flowers
- Vignette to frame another special decor piece or painting
- On an entrance hall table – either on top of the table, arranged in a group, or underneath
- As a jewellery holder
- As a table centre piece – beautiful with, or without flowers
- On a window ledge in a kitchen
- Displayed on shelves on a wall
As you can see there are so many options!
